INEC Announces New Deadline as Osun Voters Await Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has halted the collection of Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, in Osun State ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

The electoral body disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

INEC explained that the suspension would allow it to collate information on downloaded PVCs and produce the final figures of voters who collected their cards before the election.

The commission also notified voters who requested replacements for lost, damaged or defaced PVCs that the deadline for printing downloadable versions of the cards would expire at midnight on Sunday, August 9, 2026.

It said the deadline was necessary to facilitate the compilation of data on downloaded PVCs and determine the final number of cards collected across the state.

INEC recalled that PVC collection at the Registration Area level in Osun began on July 22 and ended on July 28, 2026.

It said “the Registration Area collection was extended to July 31 following complaints about large crowds and difficulties encountered by voters at collection centres.

“The collection subsequently moved to the local government level and continued from August 1 to 7, 2026.”

The electoral commission further revealed that voters in Odo-Otin and Ife Central Local Government Areas whose PVCs were reportedly stolen by hoodlums during attacks on two collection centres had been provided with access to replacement downloadable cards.

INEC stressed that the stolen PVCs could not be used to cast ballots, while advising affected voters to print their replacement downloadable copies before the deadline.

The commission assured the people of Osun State that it was fully prepared to deliver a “free, fair, credible and inclusive governorship election on August 15.”

Meanwhile, in a separate development, INEC approved additional time for political parties to submit their candidate lists for the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections slated for the February 2027 General Election.

Haruna disclosed that the deadline, initially fixed for Saturday, August 8, had been moved to Tuesday, August 11, 2026, following requests from political parties seeking more time to conclude the submission process.
