A soldier was allegedly shot and murdered by the Mobile Police Unit, MOPOL police inspector in Futuk, Alkaleri Local Government Area, Bauchi State.
According to reports, the policeman was on escort duty for a truck that was allegedly transporting minerals that were connected to a Chinese mining enterprise. It was believed that the minerals had been unlawfully removed from the mining sites in Yalo.
The truck driver allegedly disregarded the soldiers’ command to stop at a checkpoint in Futuk, which sparked trouble. After pursuing and successfully intercepting the truck, the troops confronted the on-duty police officer.
The soldiers and the police officer reportedly got into a heated argument, and the officer reportedly opened fire, wounding one of the soldiers.
The soldier was pronounced dead after being hastily transported to a hospital in Gombe State.
Major Atang Hallet Solomon, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 33 Artillery Brigade, acknowledged the incident but refrained from providing specifics due to the current investigation.
“Our relationship with the police remains cordial, and a joint investigation is underway to determine the immediate and remote causes of the incident,” Major Solomon said.
Additionally, Major Solomon clarified that investigators were still working to verify the truck’s ownership and contents.
The police officer connected to the incident had been arrested, he said, but the driver had gone.
The Commissioner of Police will visit the area on Thursday, according to SP Ahmad Wakili, the Police Public Relations Officer for Bauchi State.
“Further details will be provided after the on-the-spot assessment,” he said.
