Police deny allegation of releasing murder suspect after taking bribe

The Nasarawa State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating online that accused its personnel of releasing a murder suspect in exchange for a bribe.

According to some online news outlets, it was claimed that Joshua Moses, a young laborer, was killed at a construction site in the Gidan Rago area of Aso B, a community in the Karu Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses say Moses was fatally stabbed by a gang member following a dispute over an alleged “development levy” that workers at the site were required to pay.

“Joshua went to work as a labourer when some men arrived, demanding a fee before construction could continue.

“They claimed to be in charge of the area and insisted that anyone building there must pay them,” a source stated.

The argument turned violent, and one of the gang members allegedly pulled out a knife, stabbing Moses. He was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries en route.

Police officers from Aso A Police Station apprehended the suspect shortly after the incident. However, family members claim that the suspect was later released after a gang leader, identified as ‘Mai Angwa,’ bribed the police.

“After negotiating with the police, an undisclosed amount of money was given in cash, and the accused regained his freedom.

“The same officers later announced that the suspect had ‘escaped,’ pretending not to know about his disappearance,” a family source claimed.

When contacted by phone, the Investigating Police Officer handling the case, Clement Usman, declined to comment on the allegations.

“I don’t have anything to say about this case via phone conversation,” he stated.

The Nasarawa State police spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, responded to an inquiry and denied any knowledge of the incident, stating that the command would investigate the accuracy of the claims.

He said: “Preliminary findings revealed that no case of murder was reported or investigated at that station.

“The Commissioner of Police has summoned the officer in charge of the outstation and the Divisional Police Officer to the command headquarters and has directed that an investigation be carried out.”
