The Nigeria Police Force’s Zone 12 Command announced Monday that the officer who shot Alhaji Danlami Alhassan, a former chairman of the Ningi Local Government Council, has been arrested.

SP Thomas Goni, the Bauchi-based Zone 12 Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), promised a comprehensive and unbiased investigation into the event.

He said, “The officer involved has been identified and will face disciplinary action in line with the Force guidelines. We understand that this incident has generated a lot of tension and concern within the community. We want to assure the public that we are taking this matter very seriously.”

In order to guarantee that officers respond to circumstances with greater deference and civility, Goni went on to say that the police would examine its training programs and procedures. “We want to ensure that our officers are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle situations politely and respectfully,” he said.

Alhassan described the terrifying event, which happened on Sunday night at around 9:30 p.m. in the Wunti Market neighbourhood, to reporters in Bauchi. He disclosed that the officer’s identification was discovered after a backpack holding his police ID card, tear gas canisters and other police gear dropped from his motorbike.

“I was injured and was rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where I received treatment and was later discharged,” Alhassan said. He explained that he was on his way to buy suya (roasted meat) when the shooting occurred.

“I refused to stop because I didn’t know who he was and why he wanted me to stop. When I got to where people were, I stopped, and he crossed my car. As I opened the door to come out, before I knew what was happening, he shot from the other direction and I felt something hit me on the head while blood gushed out,” he recounted.
