The Lagos State Police Command has initiated an official probe into serious claims that members of the Tactical Squad at the Onikan Police Station attempted to extort ₦3 million from a resident while threatening him at gunpoint.
The complaint was brought to public attention by a user on X (formerly Twitter), identified as Boluwatife (@Tife_badass), who detailed the incident in a lengthy post. According to him, the event took place around 1 a.m. on Thursday, as he and a friend were en route from Lekki to Victoria Island to attend an artiste’s event.
Boluwatife recounted that roughly five armed officers intercepted their vehicle near the Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge roundabout.
He claimed the officers aggressively removed him from the driver’s seat, cocked their weapons, and accused him of being involved in the killing of police officers in the Lekki area.
He further alleged that he and his friend were handcuffed and transported to the police station in a Hilux patrol vehicle, while their car was driven separately by the officers.
At the Onikan Police Station, Boluwatife said he was told to remove his shirt, shoes, and socks in preparation for being locked up. The officers allegedly went through his personal items and car but failed to find any evidence against him.
“Two hours later, they demanded N3 million,” he wrote. “I refused, and after more pressure, they reduced it to N500,000. They returned my phone, and I quickly contacted my people for help. Thankfully, I was rescued.”
He also claimed that when he refused to pay, the officers threatened to falsely label him a fraudster and cult member. He alleged they even threatened to shoot him several times.
“I’m not shaken, but what about the common man who has nobody? They said all sorts of things to me. Ten police officers threatening you for no reason is just wild,” he wrote.
In response to the accusations, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed via a post on X that the command has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has summoned all the officers to the Command Headquarters in Ikeja and directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to investigate the complaint. The public will be updated on the outcome,” Hundeyin said.
