Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Rome, where both leaders were present to attend the funeral of Pope Francis.
Zelensky’s spokesperson confirmed the meeting but did not share any specific information about what was discussed. The encounter comes at a sensitive time, as diplomatic efforts continue to try and resolve the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
On Friday, Trump stated that discussions between his representative and Russian officials had been “productive,” and he called for direct high-level talks between Kyiv and Moscow to finalize a peace agreement.
The former president has previously cautioned that his administration may withdraw from the peace process if both sides fail to reach an agreement promptly.
The meeting in Rome marks the first in-person interaction between Trump and Zelensky since their heated exchange in the Oval Office back in February.
Following that earlier confrontation, the U.S. temporarily halted intelligence sharing with Ukraine—a move that significantly impacted Ukraine’s defense efforts against Russia. However, intelligence cooperation was later resumed.
