The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis will be discharged from the hospital on Sunday.
The head of the pope’s medical team shared this update on Saturday, adding that the pontiff would need at least two more months of rest at the Vatican.
The 88-year-old pope was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 due to a severe respiratory infection, marking the most serious health crisis of his 12-year papacy.
While he will return to the Vatican on Sunday, his doctors have indicated that his recovery will require significant time, especially given his age. They have prescribed a two-month period of rest, advising him against meetings with large groups or any activities that would require considerable effort.
“The recommendation for a period of convalescence of at least two months is very important,” Sergio Alfieri, head of the pope’s medical team, told the press conference.
The pope, who was battling double pneumonia, experienced four severe respiratory crises while in the hospital, two of which were critical and put his life in danger.
Alfieri confirmed that while the pope is no longer suffering from pneumonia, he has not fully recovered from a complex infection involving multiple microorganisms.
