Pope Leo XIV rides in popemobile ahead of inaugural mass, greets crowd

Pope Leo XIV, the first American to hold the papacy, made a public appearance in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, riding in a popemobile and greeting the crowd ahead of his formal inauguration mass.

Standing inside the iconic white vehicle, the pope waved, smiled, and made the sign of the cross as he was driven past groups of applauding pilgrims and supporters.

US Vice President JD Vance is among the many dignitaries expected to attend the inauguration ceremony, which is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. (0800 GMT).

Robert Francis Prevost, originally from Chicago, officially assumed leadership of the global Catholic Church on May 8. He now oversees the spiritual guidance of 1.4 billion Catholics and will preside over the ceremony, which features traditional rituals and symbolic acts. During the service, he will receive the papal ring and deliver a homily that is expected to outline his vision as pope.

At 69 years old, the new pontiff remains unfamiliar to many within the Church, despite his extensive missionary work in Peru spanning over 20 years. However, his recent public engagements over the past week have begun to offer insight into his leadership style.

In his recent interactions with members of the press, clergy, and diplomatic corps, Pope Leo XIV has consistently spoken in favor of global peace and social justice.

He has also reaffirmed core Catholic teachings, emphasizing the value of the traditional family structure rooted in the union between a man and a woman, and strongly advocating for the rights of the unborn.
