Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon, a well-known Ifa priest, has advised Nigerians to cease attributing their wrongdoing to the Yoruba deity Esu.
Elebuibon stressed the importance of clearing up common misunderstandings about the deity while speaking at the “Esu Is Not Satan Walk” in Osogbo, Osun State, on Tuesday, December 24.
Participants, including members of the Concerned Isese Youth, Osun State chapter, marched through the streets of Osogbo as part of the nonviolent demonstration held in honour of Esu Deity Day, which started at Osogbo City Stadium, according to Vanguard.
Cultural exhibits, chanting, and speeches intended at educating the public about Esu’s qualities marked the event’s conclusion at Oja Oba Temple.
According to The Punch, Elebuibon refuted accusations that Esu is connected to wicked deeds in his speech, characterising it as a deity of justice and discipline.
“There is a lot of misinformation and misguided notions about Esu. We want the public to understand and embrace discipline, and to stop blaming Esu for their wrong actions.
“When people steal or commit offenses, they shift the blame to Esu. Esu, as a deity, has nothing to do with their wrongdoing. It is high time Nigerians stopped using Esu as a scapegoat for their actions.”
Elebuibon also cautioned against making provocative statements that can spark confrontation and advised Nigerians to live in harmony with one another, irrespective of their religious views.
“We appeal to Nigerians to live peacefully and coexist harmoniously. We do not want violence in our society, and that is why we are making efforts like this. Let us desist from derogatory statements that could lead to chaos,” he said.
