She had already given birth to her own twin before she could even open her eyes.

I am aware that everyone is wondering, “How?” And yes, it is really as crazy as it seems. We are discussing a newborn who has their twin inside of them.

Let’s summarize it for you.

A group of medical professionals at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong were taken aback in November 2010 while doing what should have been a standard postnatal examination. There was something strange in a newborn girl’s tummy that nobody saw coming.

As it happens, neither a tumor nor a digestive abnormality was found. Two fetuses were present.

They were all fully grown by weeks eight or ten of pregnancy. They possessed little intestines, rib cages, spines, arms, legs, and even umbilical cords. This baby was essentially “pregnant” with her own siblings from birth!

Only roughly 200 examples of the phenomena have ever been documented worldwide since it was so uncommon. And because it included twins within a newborn, this one stood out even among the others.

The baby was diagnosed by the doctors with fetus-in-fetu (FIF). This unusual medical condition occurs when a distorted fetus becomes stuck inside its twin’s body during pregnancy. Imagine one sibling enveloping the other in the womb, like a parasitic twin.

The condition is typically identified in childhood or adolescence when an abdominal mass is observed. In this instance, however, it was discovered a few days after birth.

The medical team concluded that the young girl had most likely absorbed her twin siblings during her time within her mother.

A medical expert named Yu Kai-man stated, “Since it is impossible for the little girl to have conceived the pregnancy on her own, the fertilisation of the twin fetuses, of course, belongs to her parents, which has gone to the wrong place.”

Each of the two fetuses had four limbs and a spine, and they were roughly 4 and 5 cm in length. When the infant was only three weeks old, they were successfully removed during surgery.

Not exactly. Although the word “pregnant” generates headlines and gasps, that is not what actually occurred in the medical field. The baby absorbed the fetuses rather than conceiving them. The other two embryos ended up within the dominant fetus, even though the mother was initially expecting triplets.

“It is almost impossible to detect during prenatal screening and we may never know exactly why it happened.” One of the doctors told CNN in 2015

Following surgery, the “host” child in each of these cases had a normal life.

Although little is known about fetus-in-fetu, most scientists believe that it is caused by aberrant twinning. One twin is surrounded by the other at the very early phases of embryonic development, frequently as a result of insufficient separation.

According to some researchers, it’s a bad case of conjoined twinning. Some contend that it resembles a rare tumor with prenatal characteristics.

In any case, the trapped fetus is completely dependent on the host’s body for nourishment and has neither a heart nor a brain. It develops certain human characteristics despite not being viable.

Following her surgery, the newborn girl recovered completely and was released from the hospital in stable condition. It is anticipated that she will lead a typical, healthy life. Nonetheless, the tale still captivates medical professionals, scholars, and common people.
