Presbyterian Church Receives Grant to Support Neurodivergent Children

The Presbyterian Church USA has announced a $1.25 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to support efforts to include neurodivergent children in the church’s culture of worship. The grant will be distributed over five years to Grace Presbytery, a Texas affiliate comprising 130 congregations across 54 counties in North, Northeast, and Central Texas.

The project, titled Renewed Grace: Transforming Worship Practices with Neurodivergent Children, aims to shift the culture of worship in participating congregations to become more inclusive of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, including autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. Thirty congregations will be supported in designing and implementing changes to local worship practices based on lessons learnt from neurodivergent children, families, and experts in disability and theology.

According to the Rev. Dr. Jen Bluestein, Grace Presbytery coordinator of generational leadership development, “Church leaders are looking for support in including children with neurodevelopmental disorders in worship and church life because they recognize the importance of children’s participation in our churches.” She added that the project was developed in response to a growing need from churches, saying, “This project was developed in response to that growing need from our churches.”

The grant is part of the Lilly Endowment’s Nurturing Children Through Worship and Prayer Initiative, which aims to support congregations in promoting the spiritual development and inclusion of children. The project will help participating congregations create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for neurodivergent children and their families
