Dr. Usman Bugaje, a chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has called for an end to Nigeria’s rotational presidency system, citing its detrimental impact on the country’s socio-economic challenges, as stated in an interview with VANGUARD.
Bugaje proposed an alternative system, advocating for a collegiate approach where leadership is determined by merit, expertise, and character, rather than regional affiliations.
He emphasized that the persistent emphasis on North-South politics is detrimental, highlighting the need for a more inclusive and competency-based approach to leadership.
He stated that Nigeria urgently needs leaders who can tackle its pressing challenges, as the country is currently struggling to stay afloat due to divisive politics.
Leadership positions should be filled based on merit, rather than regional considerations, to ensure effective governance.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has faced criticism for its handling of the country, with some describing its governance as a complete failure.
he pointed that Nigeria’s current government has exacerbated the country’s challenges, including rising insecurity and economic downturn.
Bugaje noted that the North’s vast landmass surpasses that of other regions, but emphasized that geographical differences should not influence political decisions.
He advocated for a paradigm shift in political discourse, prioritizing national development over regional considerations.
“I think the presidential ticket should not be clouded by this North and South thing. I think we have to prioritise knowledge, competence, courage and character. In fact, the most important thing is the character. Honestly, for me, yes, the North, in terms of size, is 78 per cent of the size of the country.”
“The whole of the states of the North-East, you can put them in Niger and they will still have another space for the whole of the size of the North-East, and even there will be land remaining. Yes, that is it. This is geography,” he said.
