Following a year of political tensions that have shattered the region and left the bloc unsure, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso are leaving the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, on Wednesday.
According to report gathered, the three nations, are ruled by military governments, formally informed ECOWAS on January 29, 2024, that they wanted to leave the group right away.
But in order for it to take effect, the West African organization’s texts called for a year’s notice.
All three nations have disregarded ECOWAS’s request to extend the time by six months in an effort to find a solution, and this will take place on Wednesday.
The Alliance of Sahel States, or AES, is a confederation that today consists of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, according to information obtained.
Following the coups that put them in power, their military leaders claimed that ECOWAS had placed illegitimate, unlawful, and inhumane sanctions against them.
The three claim that the West African organization has not gone far enough in supporting them in their fight against extremist violence. They contend that ECOWAS is obedient to France, their previous colonial overlord.
It was learned that the juntas now favor alliances with nations like Russia, Turkey, and Iran, and Paris has turned into their shared enemy.
The split was caused by the coup in Niger in 2023.
ECOWAS placed severe economic sanctions on Niamey, which have since been withdrawn, and threatened to use force to restore the ousted president.
The three nations have said that they will soon form a single army of 5,000 men to combat the jihadists, and they will issue their own one passport on Wednesday.
Gilles Yabi, the founder of the West African think tank Wathi, claims that the absence of three original members will make it more difficult for ECOWAS to control regional political issues.
