Angry youths in Benue State took to the streets on Sunday, blocking the Abuja-Makurdi highway to protest the ongoing wave of violence and killings in the region.
Dressed in black and holding palm fronds along with placards bearing various messages, the protesters obstructed the busy highway, bringing traffic to a standstill and demanding urgent government intervention to stop the bloodshed.
They halted vehicle movement entirely, leading to major congestion and unease among travelers caught in the disruption.
The demonstration erupted less than a day after a brutal assault believed to be carried out by armed herders in the Yelewata area of Guma Local Government, where reports indicate that more than 200 people may have lost their lives.
In response to rising tension, the Benue State Government had previously warned against unauthorized protests and confrontations, particularly among youths in volatile areas.
However, the protesters voiced their frustration, saying they feel neglected by authorities. They called for immediate and effective security actions as well as justice for those killed in the attacks.
