Protests: Why Northerners are displaying Russian flags – Ganduje’s ex-aide, Yakasai

Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a former media aide to ex-Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has explained why Northerners are displaying Russian flags during the nationwide protests.
Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a former media adviser to former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, has provided an explanation for the reason Northerners are flying Russian flags at the nationwide protests.

On August 1, Nigerians launched the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations to voice their disapproval of the country’s dire economic circumstances and food prices.

On the other hand, demonstrators were captured on camera flying the Russian flag in several regions of the North.

Yakasai said in a writing on X that they were attempting to attract the attention of the federal authorities.

Yakasai tweeted on Monday: “The average northerner is well informed.

“They heard stories on BBC Hausa & DW of what happened in Mali, Burkina, & Niger.

“They want to use the flag to get the attention of FG.

“My fear is that they may end up getting the attention of external forces who’ll take advantage of it.”

Already, the Russian Embassy in Nigeria has distanced itself from the protesters.

It stressed in a statement released on Monday that their acts are not representative of any official policy or stance of the Russian government.
