The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has attributed the 2024 boat accident on the Anam River in Anambra State which claimed the lives of Nollywood actor Junior Pope and four others—to human negligence rather than a technical malfunction.

NIWA’s Managing Director, Bola Oyebamiji, made this known on Thursday during a stakeholders’ forum on multi-modal transportation held in Abuja.

He revealed that some of the individuals aboard the vessel had declined to wear the life jackets that were provided prior to the tragic incident.

“It was not mechanical failure, not impediments in the water or weather challenges, but purely a flagrant disregard for rules and regulations guiding movement on the inland waterways,” Oyebamiji said.

He emphasized that such disregard for safety procedures undermines the agency’s efforts to maintain security and safety on the nation’s inland waterways.

Oyebamiji urged all waterway users to cooperate with the agency by promoting safety education and compliance across the country.

The forum was attended by key figures including the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo; heads of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency; as well as Allen Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace Limited.

Junior Pope tragically lost his life in April 2024 while returning from the set of a movie titled Another Side of Life, produced by Adanma.

The boat reportedly capsized near Cable Point at the River Niger waterfront in Asaba, Delta State.
