Realignment as Abia PDP grassroots mobilizer, Igbokwe meets Abure, may join LP

Julius Abure, a factional National Chairman of the Labour Party, recently held a private meeting in Abuja with Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, a former 2023 governorship aspirant under the Abia PDP, fueling speculation about Igbokwe’s possible defection to the Labour Party.

The meeting, which took place on Thursday, also had in attendance Ceekay Igara, the former Abia State LP Chairman and current National Vice Chairman for the South East, as well as Kelechi Onuzuruike, the immediate past representative for Umuahia North in the Abia State House of Assembly.

Although details of the discussion remain unclear, the gathering has stirred speculation about a potential political alliance ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Abia State.

Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, popularly known as Don Lulu, finished second in the PDP’s 2023 governorship primaries and continues to be a significant figure in Abia’s political scene.

Some political observers in the state believe the Labour Party, which gained significant traction in the 2023 elections, may be strategically positioning itself by engaging influential figures like Igbokwe to bolster grassroots influence and youth engagement.

“If Mayor Lucky Igbokwe joins LP as suggested by his meeting with our National Chairman Julius Abure, it will be a game changer in Abia elections for 2027”, Okoro Zebulon, a member of the LP reacted on Saturday.

The meeting comes at a time when the Labour Party is still facing internal leadership disputes, with Abure and a rival faction backed by Governor Alex Otti and led by Usman Nenadi both claiming control of the party at the national level.
