No fewer than 500 women entrepreneurs in Enugu State have received small business recapitalisation grants through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Women Economic Empowerment Programme, implemented in partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
The official launch, held at the International Conference Centre in Enugu, signalled the state’s rollout of the nationwide programme, which is set to benefit 18,500 women across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking at the ceremony, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu—represented by the wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah—explained that the scheme was designed to support women entrepreneurs and traders who shoulder the daily responsibility of sustaining their families and communities.
She stressed that the initiative was not a loan but direct financial aid. “This is a seed of renewed hope to help women recapitalise their businesses and expand their capacity to support households and communities,” she said
Senator Tinubu also commended the Tony Elumelu Foundation for its N1 billion donation, which made the grants accessible to women nationwide. According to her, empowering women remains a powerful tool for national development. “When you empower a woman, you empower an entire society,” she stated.
In her remarks, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, who also serves as the RHI State Coordinator, urged the beneficiaries to put the grants to good use by growing their businesses and improving their families’ welfare. She praised Senator Tinubu’s dedication, describing her as “a leader with a heart for people and passion for women’s empowerment.”
The event drew several dignitaries, including the wife of the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mrs Chinyere Ugwu; Commissioner for Children, Gender and Social Development, Hon. Ngozi Enih; Senior Special Assistant to the Governor’s wife on Special Duties, Barr. Chidimma Egeonu; Special Assistant to the Governor on Mobilisation, Hon. Ifeoma Onoh; and ALGON Chairperson, Mrs Rita Edeh, alongside all local government chairpersons in the state.
