On Thursday, the House of Representatives extended the capital portion of the 2023 Appropriations Act and the Supplementary Appropriations Act to December 31 in response to President Bola Tinubu’s request.

After several lawmakers objected, the House convened behind closed doors, and Tinubu’s proposal was approved.

During the plenary session, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read a letter to the parliamentarians that contained Tinubu’s request.

Tinubu claimed that the extension would enable his government to completely implement the two budgets in the letter that Tajudeen read.

The N21.8 trillion 2023 Budget and the N2.17 trillion 2023 Supplementary Budget are being asked to be extended.

In addition, the N27.5 trillion 2024 Budget is being implemented simultaneously.

A few lawmakers objected to the idea, which resulted in a rowdy session and a discussion behind closed doors in the House.

As the closed-door meeting ended, the Speaker announced that he would brief Tinubu on the concerns the opposing legislators raised.

The bill’s first, second, and third readings were swiftly completed in less than 20 minutes.
