As prominent political leaders started to react on the situation, details about the scuffle that interrupted the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) North-East Consultative Meeting in Gombe State on Sunday became public on Monday.

In the midst of mounting rumors that President Bola Tinubu might not keep Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate in the 2027 elections, Vanguard’s correspondent in the North-East gathered information from trustworthy APC stakeholders in the region that revealed underlying mistrust among the governors regarding who should succeed him.

Some opponents of Shettima’s ongoing position, according to sources, pointed to what they called the Muslim-Muslim ticket’s faults, while others wrote him off as an uninspired politician who had not stood up when it mattered most.

People in that side are advocating for Shettima to be replaced in the upcoming election by either Yakubu Dogara, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, or another candidate from the north.

The three APC governors from the area were said to have had a private discussion about the growing resistance to Shettima, even though party members were not particularly aware of it.

The governors of Yobe, Gombe, and Borno reportedly met multiple times to manage the tensions in an effort to keep the internal disputes from being made public. According to reports, the purpose of these talks was to prevent any conflict over Shettima’s stance from arising prior to, during, or following the Gombe summit.

It was believed that the purpose of the meetings was to put up a united front, implying that all parties involved in the six North-East states fully supported the 2027 reelection campaign of both President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Shettima.
