Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, has clarified allegations that President Bola Tinubu’s government has prohibited the use of indigenous languages in Nigerian schools.

He stated that the use of indigenous languages was not prohibited, but that the government needed to intervene to prevent what he implied was their excessive use in schools.

The minister stated that the long-standing policy across different regions was to use indigenous languages in primary three.

He clarified, though, that it was not implemented in Southeast, South-South, Southwest, and Northcentral.

He mentioned that while the Northwest and Northeast put the policy into action, it was executed excessively.
