Afrobeats star and one-half of the now-defunct P-Square group, Peter Okoye, better known as Mr P, has stirred controversy after claiming that Nigeria’s indigenous languages offer little value.

The singer made the remark after a social media user questioned whether his children could also speak Igbo, following his earlier post celebrating their fluency in French.

Currently enjoying a vacation in Paris, France, Okoye said listening to his children converse effortlessly in French had made him consider buying a home in the French capital.

“Still in Paris! Watching my kids speak French so effortlessly makes me think… maybe it’s time to own a crib here in Paris,” he wrote on X.

Responding to his post, a fan asked, “Hope they can speak Igbo, too?” To which, the singer replied, “And who naija language help? Make I hear word abeg.”

The comment quickly sparked criticism on social media, with many users accusing the musician of dismissing the importance of Nigerian languages despite incorporating Igbo and other indigenous languages, including Yoruba, into his music and benefiting from their widespread commercial appeal.
