Suicide among Nigerian students is a growing concern, with various factors contributing to this trend. Research suggests that undergraduate students in Nigeria are experiencing increased rates of suicidal tendencies, with some studies indicating a prevalence of around 7.5% among this population.
Alcoholism is a significant risk factor, with a notable association found between alcohol consumption and suicidal tendencies among Nigerian students. Other factors contributing to suicidal thoughts and behaviors include depression, low self-esteem, bullying, recreational drug use, financial constraints, and marital conflicts.
A study analyzing newspaper reports found that the South West region of Nigeria had the highest media report rate of suicide, followed by the North Central and South East regions. The most common methods of suicide reported in the study were hanging and poisoning.
To address this issue, introducing suicidal prevention education into university curricula can be beneficial. Regular awareness programs and workshops can educate students about mental health, stress management, and coping mechanisms. Providing accessible mental health resources and support services on campus can also help students struggling with suicidal thoughts. Encouraging a supportive campus environment and promoting social connections can help mitigate suicidal tendencies.
