The African Development Bank (AfDB) has projected that the Nigerian naira will depreciate by at least 6% between 2025 and 2026, citing growing global financial market volatility as a key factor. This depreciation trend is not unique to Nigeria, as 21 African nations are expected to experience currency depreciation in 2025, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Libya, Rwanda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Currencies Expected to Depreciate:

– Nigerian Naira: 6% depreciation projected for 2025-2026 due to global financial market volatility

– Egyptian Pound: Expected to depreciate amid economic challenges and inflationary pressures

– Ethiopian Birr: Depreciation projected due to economic instability and external factors

On the other hand, some African currencies are expected to appreciate against the US dollar, including¹ ²:

– Kenyan Shilling: Expected to appreciate by more than 3% due to strong market fundamentals and successful Eurobond issuance

– Moroccan Dirham: Anticipated to remain stable due to economic reforms and strong trade ties with Europe

– South African Rand: Recently experienced volatility due to national election results and global economic factors, but has shown resilience

Factors Influencing Currency Strength:

– Economic stability: Countries with sound economic policies, low debt levels, and clear regulatory frameworks tend to have stronger currencies

– Political stability: Stable governments and policies inspire confidence among foreign investors and attract capital inflows

– Inflation control: Lower inflation rates mean a currency retains its value over time, protecting it from depreciation

– Foreign exchange reserves: Substantial reserves act as a buffer against economic shocks and currency fluctuations
