Rivers: Amaechi sets aside differences, dedicates award to Wike

Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, has dedicated an award to his long-time political foe, Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The gesture comes amid a conflict between the two lawmakers that began in 2015, when Amaechi defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During his two terms as Rivers State governor, Amaechi initiated the College of Medical Sciences project at Rivers State University (RSU). However, he was unable to finish it before leaving the office in 2015. Wike, who followed Amaechi as governor, continued the project, which resulted in the matriculation of the first class of medical students in 2018.

On Thursday, February 6, Amaechi presented the honour to Wike and praised him for his efforts in completing the college project.

The award was presented to Amaechi by the college’s administration during the induction of its first class of graduates into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

Dr Fatima Kyari, the interim Registrar of the university and CEO of MDCN, thanked Amaechi for starting the medical college initiative. She stated that the induction ceremony represented the start of a new chapter for the graduates and voiced her support for the health sector transformation project.
