Supporters of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara (suspended) and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike clashed Friday in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, according to Channels Television.

This occurred at a town hall meeting attended by other Rivers residents and natives, as well as supporters of both sides.

Attendees took turns speaking at the town hall meeting, sharing their opinions on the political crisis roiling the oil-rich state.

Trouble began as the public voiced their opinions about the problem when Bright Amaewhule, the President General of the Grassroots Development Initiative, GDI, ascended the platform and declared, “There’s no indigene of Rivers State that will not recognize the role GDI played in the emergence of Sim Fubara as Governor of Rivers State.

“Before the campaign proper, we moved Sim from one local government to another, not the Honourable Minister.

“GDI was the group that propelled Sim into being accepted by the people of Rivers State even when he was rejected by the people who claim to be his brothers and sisters.

“Even when those who now came around him after he had become governor, asking him not to listen to any other person, asking him not to be loyal to the political party that brought him. These were the problems.”

“I can’t sit here and listen to this,” said Hilda Dokubo, the chairman of the Rivers Labour Party, who was seated in the front row, after the GDI president’s remarks.

According to Channels Television, the organizers later persuaded her to take her seat again.

In response to Mr. Amaewhule’s remarks, Mr. Kenwell Ibanibo, the next speaker, remarked, “I’ve heard the GDI Chairman say they supported Sim Fubara to become governor, but I’m asking you, what did he do to warrant the 1st impeachment attempt after just 5 months?

“The point is, somebody somewhere who thinks he’s the owner of Rivers State took this position and influenced the impeachment.”

Supporters of the FCT Minister, led by Rivers APC Chairman Chibike Ikenga, who is a factionalist, interrupted at this point. Mr. Ibanibo began to argue with them, but he insisted, “You spoke, I didn’t interrupt you.”

Both factions’ fans were exchanging heated comments, with one Wike supporter heard yelling, “Insult Wike now! Una go still beg, una go still come lie down. Person wey lie down never stand up una dey talk!” To which the now returned Hilda Dokubo fired back, “Him no go lie down! I say him no go lie down! No be Wike lie down for somewhere so!?”

The anchor repeatedly urged everyone to take their seats in an attempt to restore control of the situation as the brawl continued.

Even Mr. Jake Epelle was seen attempting to soothe tense nerves by urging the restless people to put their swords down.

In order to keep an eye on the stressful situation, the bouncers even entered the hall and took up strategic positions.

Following several minutes of yelling and protesting, Mr. Ibanibo offered to step away from the stage for a while so that there could be peace. Tensions were reduced as a result, and the town hall went on.

That wasn’t the end of it, either, as Mr. Ikenga interrupted well-known Niger Delta activist Ann-Kio Briggs, sparking a heated debate.

She curtly shut him down, saying, “I don’t know when you spoke, but I did not interrupt you, please let me be. If I don’t speak for you, I speak for myself.”

Following the crisis, President Bola Tinubu suspended the governor for six months, which ultimately led to the state’s oil infrastructure being gradually destroyed.
