On social media right now is an old video clip of Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, speaking out against the godfather syndrome.
Wike, the current minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was heard in the video stating that Rivers will not tolerate the godfather syndrome that affects some states in Nigeria.
In instance, he believed that while the godfatherism system might exist in Lagos State, it does not exist in Rivers.
“It may happen in Lagos State but it cannot happen in Rivers, we are quite different. As a governor, I will come and go and I can’t stop it.
“The day that my tenure ends, by the grace of God, I will go. When you are thinking that what is happening in Lagos State, we will do it here, it may be difficult.
“You can’t continue to say that you must be a godfather of a state. That is the problem and it is not possible”, he said.
The state is currently experiencing one of the biggest political crises in the nation as a result of the confrontation between Wike and Siminalayi Fubara, the current governor.
The two political fighters are engaged in a power struggle over the state’s leadership.
