Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara ruled on Friday that the state’s local government must convene as planned.

Fubara further announced that the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun can’t prohibit him from reaching the premises of the state’s Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC.

Speaking to a crowd in Port Harcourt, the governor said that if the IGP didn’t shoot him, they wouldn’t be able to get him inside the RSIEC building.

The governor said: “When it comes to the issue of Rivers State it becomes different, you are not ashamed to call yourself Inspector General of Police. Enough is enough, I will be here and if I go back and if I hear anybody complain, I will come here because this is my property.

“You don’t have any power whatsoever to bar me from entering.

“Try it and part of your history as a wicked IGP would include shooting Fubara. I think that I have given you enough respect and to all Rivers indigenes, elections must hold; anything that wants to happen should happen.”

The local government election that was supposed to take place on Saturday would not be held, as promised by the Rivers State Police Command.

The Command acknowledged receiving a restraining order prohibiting the police from providing protection for the LGA elections in a statement headlined “Proposed October 5th, 2024 Local Government Chairman Election” and signed by SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the organisation.

The Command added that it is aware of the Abuja Federal High Court’s decision on September 30, 2024, prohibiting the Police Force from taking part in the election.

The statement went on to say that the court decision is final and takes precedence, as instructed by the Force Legal Department.
