In response to recent explosions in Rivers State, the Federal Government has sent 10,000 members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to guard oil pipelines and prevent additional attacks on vital infrastructure.

According to Afolabi Babawale, the NSCDC spokesperson, who confirmed the deployment to reporters on Wednesday, the agents’ duties include protecting pipelines and preventing vandalism, especially in the Niger Delta.

Babawale emphasized that the deployment of more than 10,000 officers, in coordination with other security agencies, is intended to secure the safety of people and property in the region and issued a strong warning against any destruction of national assets and infrastructure.

Ibas took the oath of office on Wednesday and was given the authority to lead the state for the first six months.

Tensions were high in the state prior to the emergency rule being imposed, which led to three explosions in two days. Ijaw organizations threatened to interrupt oil production and damage the economy if the effort to impeach Fubara was successful, and the explosions came after their threats.

Babawale talked about the country’s increased state of alert, especially in the Niger Delta, where the NSCDC is collaborating closely with other security agencies to fight pipeline vandalism, economic sabotage, and the destruction of government property.

Following Governor Fubara’s departure on Wednesday, additional soldiers were observed roving the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Although the governor’s precise location is unknown, it is believed that he either withdrew to his home or birthplace in Opobo. Now, there are armored personnel carriers at the entrance, strict security measures are in place, and the flow of people and cars into Government House is constantly watched.

According to a Fubara aide who spoke on condition of anonymity, the soldiers were already in the Government House, and more were coming in as a lead group for the new sole administrator.

He stated, “As I speak with you, more soldiers are entering the Government House. This afternoon, over 15 came in. They are believed to be an advanced team of the Sole Administrator who is still expected to resume duties. This evening, some more soldiers came in.”
