During his Tuesday night appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, Amaechi recapped the long-standing conflict between himself and Nyesom Wike, his erstwhile political comrade who is now his competitor.

Rotimi Amaechi, the former minister of transportation, has criticized Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), saying that Wike did not make him governor but rather appointed him as a subordinate to be closely watched as Chief of Staff.

During his Tuesday night appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, Amaechi recapped the long-standing conflict between himself and Nyesom Wike, his erstwhile political comrade who is now his competitor.

In a scathing rejoinder, Amaechi said that Wike was not elected governor of Rivers State; rather, it was God, previous Governor Dr. Odili, the Nigerian courts, and the people of Rivers State.Cultural tours in Nigeria

“The first thing I want to make clear is this: nobody made me Governor. It was God, Dr. Peter Odili, and the Nigerian judiciary—nobody else,” Amaechi declared.

His remarks echo Wike’s recent remark that “we’re all hungry,” which Amaechi made on his 60th birthday. Wike denied that claim, claiming that Amaechi was more interested in political significance than food.

In response, Amaechi rejected Wike’s assertion that he was instrumental in getting him elected governor.

“As a journalist, nobody has ever asked that man who claims he made me governor: ‘How exactly did you make him governor?’ Right? Nobody has ever asked that question,” Amaechi stated.

He mentioned that Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who is currently the Attorney General of the Federation, was his primary attorney during the court battle that resulted in his elevation to the position of governor. Amaechi claims that Wike’s influence had nothing to do with the landmark court ruling that named him governor.

“I went to court. If anything, Lateef Fagbemi, now Anthony General of the Federation was my lawyer. You can ask him,” he said.

Amaechi also recalled how, following his court victory, Wike had requested to be named Commissioner for Finance in Rivers State in order to obtain a significant portfolio.

“Mohammed Adoke flew from Abuja to Port Harcourt to make that case. But I said no. I wanted Wike as Chief of Staff so I could supervise him directly. I never offered him the position of Commissioner for Finance,” Amaechi revealed.

Amaechi took a thinly veiled jab when he said that Wike made everything for himself.

“Let’s be honest: he made himself Chief of Staff, made himself Governor, made himself minister…—so let it end there. Don’t go any further,” he quipped, adding, “I don’t want to join issues with children.”

Despite their subsequent roles, Amaechi emphasized that he still views Wike as a former subordinate and that he once had power over him.

“I’ve said it several times: he was my subordinate. I was once his boss, whether he likes it or not. I hired him. I could have said no. Just because we’ve both held certain positions doesn’t mean we’re equals,” he emphasised.

Amaechi emphasized his wider leadership background by pointing out that, in addition to serving as governor and minister like Wike, he was also the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, which was an extra feather in his political crown.

“Yes, I was a governor. He became a governor. I was a minister. He became a minister. But I was also a Speaker,” he added.
