David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, has called on Japan to support Ukraine by increasing economic pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In a televised statement made alongside his Japanese counterpart, Takeshi Iwaya, in Tokyo on Friday, Lammy emphasized: “Our shared interests in a stable international system and rules-based trade is absolutely clear and fundamental.
“Europe is stepping up, but Japan can help too, including on ramping up economic pressure on [Vladimir] Putin.”
This comes less than 24 hours after the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that Europe faces a ‘clear and present danger’ due to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
Von der Leyen stressed that European countries must be capable of defending themselves while also positioning Ukraine strongly against Russia.
The war between Ukraine and Russia has now been ongoing for more than three years, with significant casualties on both sides.
