On Tuesday, the Kremlin stated that Russia was continuing its dialogue with the United States despite President Donald Trump’s threats to impose secondary sanctions on Russian oil if Moscow fails to work toward ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump, who expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a conversation with reporters on Monday, stated that he wanted to see the Kremlin leader reach a deal to halt the ongoing conflict, which has now entered its fourth year.

“I want to see him make a deal so that we stop Russian soldiers and Ukrainian soldiers and other people from being killed. I want to make sure that he follows through, and I think he will,” Trump said in the Oval Office.

A day earlier, Trump had voiced anger after Putin criticized the leadership of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and suggested he would consider secondary sanctions on Russian oil if Moscow obstructed a peace agreement with Ukraine.

When asked about Trump’s comments on wanting Putin to negotiate a deal, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that contacts with the U.S. were ongoing.

“The subject is very complex. The substance that we are discussing, related to the Ukrainian settlement, is very complex. This requires a lot of extra effort,” he said.

Before the weekend, Trump had taken a more conciliatory approach toward Russia, which raised concerns among Western allies as he sought to mediate an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

Thus far, Russia has cautiously responded to Trump’s overtures, agreeing to halt its attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure if Kyiv reciprocates. However, both sides have accused each other of violating the agreed moratorium.
