Sallah Durbar Ban: Security embargo in best interest of Kano – Emir Sanusi

The Emir of Kano and Khalifah of Tijaniyya, His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, has responded to the recent ban on the Sallah Durbar, stating that the decision was necessary for the long-term peace and development of the state.

Emir Sanusi further emphasized that the traditional Sallah Durbar, celebrated annually at the end of Ramadan, is not a life-or-death matter but a cultural event with roots dating back to the 15th century.

Speaking at an Iftar dinner hosted at his palace on Saturday, where he welcomed distinguished Islamic scholars and key figures, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) shared his views.

As a first-class emir, Sanusi highlighted that peace is the foundation of progress and development in any society. He confirmed his decision to cancel all planned activities for the traditional Durbar celebration, in line with the ban.

The ban on the Sallah Durbar was announced by the Commissioner of Police in Kano, CP Adamu Bakori, citing security concerns raised by relevant authorities.

Despite the ban, Emir Sanusi reassured that he does not view the Eid El Fitr Durbar as a matter of life and death, placing more importance on the safety and well-being of Kano’s citizens.

He urged residents and the wider public to maintain peace and adhere to the law, cooperating with security agencies to ensure order during and after the Sallah festival.

On his part, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, through his representative, Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Faruq, commended the Emir for his compassionate and considerate approach.

The SSG reflected on the Emir’s kindness, recalling his time as a lecturer at ABU in the early 1980s, where Emir Sanusi had been a supportive mentor to his students.

Faruq expressed gratitude to the Emir for prioritizing the safety of Kano’s residents by agreeing to cancel the Eid El Fitr Durbar.

Additionally, the Murshid (Chief Imam) of the National Mosque, Professor Shehu Galadanci, praised Emir Sanusi for his wisdom and leadership, recognizing his profound knowledge and the thoughtful decisions he made for the well-being of the Emirate.
