Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) has launched its ‘Saudi Noor’ ophthalmic volunteer program at Gbagada General Hospital in Lagos. The week-long initiative, which runs until May 27, 2025, aims to provide free eye care services to thousands of Lagosians.

According to Mohammed Alsahabi, Saudi Press Attaché in Nigeria, “The decision to bring the Saudi Noor program to Lagos acknowledges the critical need for specialised eye care even within bustling city centres.” He emphasised that the program reinforces the relationship between Saudi Arabia and Nigeria, with a shared goal of eradicating preventable blindness.

The Saudi Noor program will provide comprehensive care, including diagnostic screenings, sight-restoring cataract surgeries with advanced intraocular lens implants, and prescription eyeglasses. Alsahabi noted that KSrelief’s blindness prevention campaign in Nigeria has a proven track record of success, having conducted over 218,000 eye examinations and facilitated more than 21,000 surgical interventions since 2019.

Alsahabi said, “This initiative is a core component of KSrelief’s global mandate to assist communities facing systemic healthcare challenges.” He added that globally, KSrelief has executed over 3,100 relief projects in more than 107 countries, demonstrating a consistent commitment to humanitarian excellence.

Beneficiaries of the program, including Alhaji Isa Imam and Mrs. Patience Olaniyan, expressed gratitude for the free eye care services. Imam, a retiree, had been unable to afford the N250,000 cost of eye surgery at Ikeja General Hospital. After undergoing surgery, he offered heartfelt prayers for the Saudi Embassy.

Olaniyan, who had been experiencing deteriorating vision, seized the opportunity for an eye test at Yaba College of Technology (Yabatec) and underwent successful cataract surgery. She thanked the Saudi Embassy for the intervention. Another beneficiary, Demola Olayiwola, a retired civil servant, learned about the program through a radio advertisement and expressed gratitude for the free surgery
