In a country where financial struggles often hinder students’ academic progress, Fountain University’s scholarship initiative has emerged as a beacon of hope. The programme, which awarded over ₦46 million in scholarships to 155 students in 2024, has transformed the lives of beneficiaries like Ruth Lily Oshin.

Oshin’s academic journey was nearly derailed when her father was diagnosed with lung cancer. With mounting medical bills and no steady income, she faced a heartbreaking decision: leave school to support her family. However, the university’s scholarship initiative offered her a second chance.

“I gained admission in the 2022/2023 session, and everything was going well until my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer in my second year,” Oshin revealed. “My dad stopped working because of his health, and my mom had no job. We spent everything we had on his treatment.”

Although Oshin didn’t receive the scholarship, her brother did, which helped alleviate their family’s financial burden. “I’m still grateful,” Oshin said. “Even though I didn’t get the scholarship, my brother’s award has helped my family. It gave me a second chance, and for that, I’m thankful.”

The scholarship initiative is a testament to the university’s commitment to student welfare and academic excellence. Prof. Olayinka Ramota Karim, the institution’s vice chancellor, has been instrumental in expanding the programme, which relies on donor support.

“We want to ensure that every student, regardless of their financial status, has access to education,” said Taoheed Alimi, the university’s Public Relations Officer. “The scholarship programme is a reflection of the university’s commitment to student welfare. We are determined to make Fountain University affordable for everyone, no matter their financial background.”

Beneficiaries like Asisat Maiyegun and Hammed Afolabi Osuolale have experienced life-changing transformations thanks to the scholarship. Maiyegun, a high-achieving student, received two scholarships—one for academic excellence and another for financial need.

“The economy is tough, and I was just trying to help my parents with expenses,” Maiyegun said. “This scholarship has not only reduced our struggles but has also motivated me to aim even higher.”

Osuolale, a 300-level Political Science student, echoed Maiyegun’s sentiments. “When I received the news about the scholarship, I felt an urge to work even harder. It’s not just about the financial support; it’s a recognition of my effort and dedication.”

While the scholarship initiative has provided hope to numerous students, its limitations are evident. The programme’s reliance on donor support poses challenges, and determining the most deserving candidates is a complex process.

Despite these challenges, the impact of Fountain University’s scholarship initiative is undeniable. It represents a commitment to student welfare and academic excellence, offering a lifeline to students in need. As the university continues to expand the programme, it is clear that the initiative will remain a vital source of support for students striving to achieve their academic dreams.
