Southborough High School Students and Staff Unite for Charity Walk
Twenty students and teachers from Southborough High School in Surbiton will embark on a 10 km winter walk through London on January 25 to raise funds for Royal Star & Garter, a charity that provides care to veterans and their partners living with disability or dementia.
The school has developed a strong bond with the charity’s Surbiton Home, with pupils visiting regularly as part of their Young Leaders Award. The residents have also visited the school to share their experiences with Year 7 students.
Headteacher Niall Smith, Senior Assistant Headteacher Dan Edwards, and school governor Matthew Iles will join the students on the walk. Mr. Edwards praised the intergenerational friendship between the students and residents, saying, “It’s truly inspirational to see the compassion and mutual respect grow between the young and old in our local community.”
The school will be joined by two RAF veterans, Heather Perkins and Ryan O’Connor, who are also raising funds for Royal Star & Garter. Heather, a senior partnerships officer at the charity, expressed her gratitude for the school’s support, saying, “We’d love to start the year with a bang and raise as much money as possible to help the veterans we care for.”
Ryan, who attained the rank of Senior Aircraftman (SAC) during his five years in the RAF, emphasized the importance of supporting the charity, saying, “Royal Star & Garter is a charity that helps veterans and their families, and one day that might be me and my family.”
The group aims to raise £1,500 for Royal Star & Garter, which provides loving and compassionate care to veterans and their partners in its homes in Surbiton, Solihull, and High Wycombe.
