The Social Democratic Party (SDP), according to prominent New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) member Buba Galadima, is just a branch of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Galadima questioned the independence of the SDP in an interview with Arise TV on Monday, pointing out that only members of the APC appear to be switching to it.

He added that the APC was originally created as a coalition of individuals with varied backgrounds and ideas, and that the SDP is mostly made up of former APC members.

“The SDP is just an offshoot of the APC. It was APC members who moved to what is now called SDP—nothing more. How many people from other parties have joined the SDP? That is the real question.”

Galadima also compared the situation to politics in Lagos, asserting that the opposition forces were being systematically dismantled by the ruling party.

He brought up Jandor, the former PDP candidate for governor, who he said was wrongfully excluded from the previous election but eventually joined the APC in spite of strong public support.

He urged politicians to pursue opposition politics grounded in values rather than personal gain.

Galadima responded,“We are a party of ideology and principles. We don’t enter coalitions just for the sake of power at all costs.” when asked why the NNPP did not join a coalition with other parties during the 2023 elections.
