Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other opposition leaders have received a strong message from Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) 2023 presidential candidate, cautioning them against trying to use the SDP for their own political struggles against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday at his wife Queen Lillian Adebayo’s 50th birthday party, Adebayo insisted that the SDP is still dedicated to helping the Nigerian people and is not a venue for resentful politicians looking to exact retribution.
“We don’t want to be a getaway car for a conspiracy and robbery we did not plan. That’s not available,” he declared.
Adebayo reiterated his desire to run for president in 2027 but made it clear that the SDP will only accept coalitions that are truly focused on solving Nigeria’s problems, not ones that were formed out of political resentment.
“If the coalition is for the Nigerian people, the SDP is available. But if it is just a crime centre for disappointed Tinubu followers, they should go back to him and resolve their differences there,” he added.
In order to solve the persistent violence in places like Benue and Plateau, Adebayo urged President Tinubu to immediately restructure the nation’s security framework.
In a related move, former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore also denounced the new alliance of opposition leaders. Speaking to reporters, Sowore said he was in favor of real opposition coalitions but questioned the legitimacy of those forming them.
“I support coalitions and opposition. But not the kind that has people like El-Rufai. The APC itself was a coalition, and most of the people behind this new move were part of Buhari’s cabinet. They should be in prison, not forming coalitions,” he said.
Hon. Femi Olaniyi Ferrari, the chairman of the Lagos SDP and chairman of the SDP State Chairmen Forum, also spoke, stating that the SDP is still a viable platform for Nigerians looking for real change.
“We asked for change, but the change has shortchanged us,” he noted, affirming the party’s determination and commitment to offer credible leadership alternatives.
