Sentome Obi, a police superintendent, has received praise from Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri for turning down $17,000 from a suspected kidnapper.
In addition to recommending him for a promotion to the Inspector-General of Police, the governor gave him a car and a three-bedroom apartment.
Diri claims that Obi turned down a bribe from a suspect who was allegedly involved in the June 21 kidnapping of Ebiyerin Omukoro, the state’s chief judge.
After being held captive for 12 days, Omukoro was released.
Diri declared during Wednesday’s state executive council meeting in Yenagoa that all members of the gang had been detained by security forces, with the exception of the leader, who is still at large.
“Bayelsa has zero tolerance for crime and criminality. We have greatly improved our crime-fighting capacity through technology.
“We summoned security agencies, gave them the necessary logistics, and they were able to rescue the judge unhurt. Everyone involved in the abduction has been picked up, except one,” the governor said.
Diri went on to call him a model of integrity, stating that his actions made Bayelsa state proud and the Nigerian Police dignified.
