The Nigerian Senate has proposed a compensation package of ₦200 million for the family of a two-year-old child who was fatally shot by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) during a raid in Delta State.

The tragic event occurred on July 13, 2023, when NDLEA officers, conducting an operation at a suspected drug hotspot in Delta State, mistakenly fired a bullet that struck and killed Ivan Onosereba Omhonria. His younger brother, Eronmosele, also sustained an injury when the bullet grazed his eye. The incident happened at their mother’s shop in Okpanam, within the Oshimili North Local Government Area.

The bullet hit Ivan in the abdomen and injured his brother’s eye, leading to Ivan’s death and Eronmosele’s partial vision loss.

Following the incident, Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North, filed a petition on behalf of the affected family in July 2023. The matter was referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, led by Senator Neda Imasuen, for thorough investigation.

While presenting the committee’s report during Thursday’s plenary session, Senator Imasuen noted that all parties involved had been summoned for questioning. He added that the NDLEA claimed it lacked the resources to fund the medical treatment Eronmosele requires abroad.

As part of the recommendations, Imasuen urged the NDLEA to bear the full cost of Eronmosele’s medical care—preferably outside the country—to restore his vision. He further suggested that the federal government, through presidential approval, should award ₦200 million in compensation to the grieving family.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, expressed strong disapproval of the incident. When the recommendations were put to a voice vote, they received resounding support from the majority of senators.
