Senate sends urgent message to newly appointed Administrator after resumption

According to reports, Ibok-Ete Ibas, the recently appointed Interim Administrator of Rivers State, received an urgent letter from the Nigerian Senate instructing him to report directly to them rather than the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

This ruling comes after the emergency rule in Rivers State was approved by the House of Representatives, which led to the elimination of:

Siminalayi Fubara, the governor

Ngozi Odu, the Deputy Governor, and

Members of the Assembly of the state.

In response, Vice Admiral (Rtd.) Ibok-Ete Ibas was named Interim Administrator by President Bola Tinubu to lead the state for the first six months.

The Senate insisted that Ibas report directly to them rather than the FEC, even though the House of Representatives approved the emergency rule with certain modifications.

Section 11, Subsection 4 of the Nigerian Constitution, which permits the National Assembly to assume the legislative duties of a state under crisis, serves as the foundation for their decision.

Ibas’ nomination and the emergency declaration have drawn a lot of criticism, with many people viewing it as:

A challenge to democracy,

An attempt to overthrow the elected government of Rivers State.
