Two hundred students from Niger East Senatorial District on Monday departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to commence undergraduate studies in India and China under the Senator Mohammed Sani Musa International Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme.

The initiative, hailed by parents, traditional rulers, and community leaders as a historic investment in education, has been described as the largest overseas scholarship programme ever facilitated by an elected representative from Niger East.

Speaking at the send-off ceremony on behalf of the senator, his wife Hajia Saadatu Sani Musa explained that the scheme was designed to close educational gaps, broaden global exposure, and develop a generation of professionals who would return to contribute to Niger State and Nigeria.

“This is not just about sending young people abroad; it is about preparing an army of thinkers, builders, and innovators who will return with the skills to transform Niger East and Nigeria,” she said.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Hajia Saadatu reminded them of the weight of responsibility that comes with the opportunity. “Opportunity without discipline is wasted, and talent without hard work is buried treasure. You are going as ambassadors of Niger East, nurtured in the values of respect, integrity, and community spirit. Remember: our tomorrow must be better than today, and that begins with the education of our children,” she urged.

She further cautioned them to remain focused, avoid distractions and peer pressure, and to see their studies as a mission rather than a privilege. “Your success will be measured not by the certificates you bring home but by the impact you make on our people when you return,” she added.

Parents at the airport were visibly emotional, describing the programme as life-changing. One of them, Malam Abdullahi, father of a beneficiary, said, “For us, this is more than just a scholarship; it is a ladder out of poverty and a ticket to a brighter future. Our children now have a chance we could only dream of.”

Traditional and religious leaders present at the occasion commended Senator Musa for his vision, noting that investing in young people’s education is the most sustainable form of development

India and China were chosen as destinations because of their globally respected universities in medicine, engineering, technology, and management sciences. The programme is expected to provide the students with academic training, cross-cultural experience, and leadership skills that will prepare them for community and national development on their return.

Senator Musa has pledged to sustain and expand the initiative, describing education as a cornerstone of both his legislative work and philanthropic agenda.

As the students prepared to board their flights, Hajia Saadatu concluded the send-off with a heartfelt prayer: “Go forth, shine, and may Almighty Allah guide your steps, protect you, and crown your efforts with resounding success. Safe journey, our pride. Your story of success has just begun.”

For Niger East, the departure of these students represents a bold step in human capital development, laying the foundation for future professionals and leaders who will drive progress at home
