The suspended senator from Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has been called for to be reinstated immediately by the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP.

The lawmaker was suspended after the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions adopted the report on Thursday.

The Senate adopted the committee’s recommendation that the controversial senator be suspended from all legislative activity, effective March 6, 2025.

However, a statement by the spokesperson of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, condemned the ruling as a violation of parliamentary traditions and fair hearing.

The PDP pointed out that suspending Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months practically denies her constituents their right to representation.

The opposition party claims that Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, ought not to have presided over a case in which he is charged.

“The PDP asserts that the action of the Akpabio-led Senate leadership against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan smacks of desperation to cover up.

“The party observes that the hasty suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan without an open investigation into the weighty allegation of sexual harassment against the Senate President not only negates the principle of fair hearing, especially in parliamentary convention, but also portrays the Senate as an institution that endorses, condones, and offers protection to reprobacy,” the statement read in part.

According to the PDP, Akpabio ought to resign and permit a free and unbiased investigation into the claims made by Akpoti-Uduaghan.
