At least seven people have died and many more sustained injuries after two separate bridge collapses occurred in western Russia near the Ukrainian border, officials said on Sunday.

The accidents—one in Bryansk and another in Kursk—caused widespread disruption. Rail authorities suggested that at least one of the incidents may have involved “illegal interference.”

In Bryansk, a bridge spanning a railway gave way late Saturday, crashing down onto the tracks and causing a passenger train en route to Moscow to derail.

Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed via Telegram that the collapse claimed seven lives and left 66 others hurt, including three children.

Footage posted on Russian social media platforms showed rescue workers navigating through twisted metal debris, while the cries of those trapped or injured could be heard in the background.

“There are seven dead as a result of the collapse of a bridge onto railway tracks,” Bogomaz stated.

Elsewhere, in the Kursk region, a separate rail bridge came down overnight in Zheleznogorsk district, derailing a freight train and injuring the train’s driver.

Kursk Governor Alexander Khinshtein reported that a portion of the train had fallen onto the road beneath the bridge. The injured crew was transported to the hospital.

Initially, Moscow Railways—the state-run rail operator—attributed the Bryansk collapse to “illegal interference in the operation of transport,” a phrase often interpreted as a possible act of sabotage. However, the statement was later revised, with that line removed.

Investigations have been opened by Russian prosecutors into both events, though no official explanation has been given so far.

There has been no response from Kyiv regarding the collapses, though Moscow has repeatedly blamed Ukraine for carrying out sabotage missions aimed at Russia’s rail network, a critical component in moving troops and military supplies during the ongoing war.

These latest events contribute to a mounting series of infrastructure breakdowns and assaults within Russian territory since the conflict began in 2022, with railway systems frequently being targeted.

Emergency responders, including engineers and rescue crews, were deployed to both sites. In Moscow, ambulances were seen stationed at Kievsky railway terminal, awaiting injured passengers arriving from the Bryansk crash.

The incidents also come just before a possible diplomatic meeting between Russian and Ukrainian representatives in Istanbul, part of a renewed peace initiative supported by the United States aimed at ending the nearly three-year-long war.
