A long-running swap shop event in Shetland has raised thousands of pounds for charity, bringing the total amount raised over the years to over £60,000. The event, organized by Sharon Deyell, was held at the Aith Hall on Sunday afternoon and attracted a large crowd of people eager to pick up bargains and support a good cause.

The swap shop allows people to donate clothes and accessories and take away items they like in return for a donation. The event also includes a raffle, with prizes donated by members of the community, including TV presenter Lorraine Kelly. Kelly donated a sparkly jacket she wore to the Royal Variety Performance last year, as well as a signed photo of her meeting King Charles.

Nine-year-old Bobby-Joe Johnson cut the ribbon to open the event, which was attended by people of all ages. The swap shop was stocked with a vast array of clothes and accessories, all donated by members of the community.

Sharon Deyell, the organizer of the event, said it was “such a brilliant day, with an amazing total” raised. She paid tribute to the “army” of volunteers who worked tirelessly to set up the event and make it a success.

“There were far more clothes donated than I ever expected this year,” Deyell said. “I thought it might be a peerie event this year, but that didn’t happen. 

The raffle ticket sellers were kept busy all day selling raffles, and the teapot pourers never stopped pouring teas.”

The money raised from the event will be donated to Clan Cancer Support and the Viking Genes project.
