A little schoolgirl was brutally attacked by a man named Mamman Shettima Baba after she picked mangoes from a compound in Maiduguri’s Pompomari Housing Estate.
The attack, which was caught on camera and extensively shared on social media, showed Shettima Baba brutally beating the girl with a heavy stick as his wife watched and encouraged him to keep going.
According to witnesses, the girl and her companions went into an open-gated compound to collect mangoes on their way home from school. One of the girls was captured by some Almajiri children, who then gave her to the local mother. After that, she gave her husband the order to discipline the youngster, which resulted in the severe beating.
Shettima Baba was arrested by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) after they acted quickly in response to the widely shared video. The suspect admitted to the assault and justified his conduct by saying that students regularly stole mangoes from his tree, according to NSCDC Commandant Abdulrazaq Haroon, who verified the arrest.
Legal professionals, child rights advocates, and government representatives have demanded stringent legal action in response to the occurrence, which has caused widespread indignation.
A lawyer named Hamza Nuhu Dantani has petitioned the Commissioner of Police in Borno State to bring Shettima Baba to justice right away. Citing infractions of the Borno State Penal Code Law, 2023, the petition charges him with assault, criminal intimidation, causing grave hurt, and attempted homicide. It also demands:
Shettima Baba’s prompt prosecution.
A thorough investigation to find and prosecute any collaborators.
Assistance for the victim’s health and mental well.
A public alert against child abuse and violence.
The public has been reassured that justice will be delivered by the Commissioner of Justice and Lawan Abbah Wakilbe, the Commissioner of Education for Borno State.
Human rights violations in Borno State frequently go unpunished despite legal protections for minors because of societal pressure and political influence. People are keeping a careful eye on this case to see if it will result in actual repercussions or if it will just serve as another instance of impunity.
