Shocking: DisCos miss out on54.18 billion in unpaid bills

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed that the 12 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria failed to collect ₦54.18 billion from their customers in February 2025. According to NERC’s Commercial Performance Data for February 2025, the DisCos issued bills totalling N245.93 billion but only collected N191.75 billion, resulting in a collection efficiency of 77.97%.

NERC stated that the total energy received by the DisCos in February was 2,583.19 GWh, while the total energy billed was 2,135 GWh, representing a billing efficiency of 82.73%. The commission also noted that the actual tariff was N116.18 kWh, while the average collection was N88.2 kWh, resulting in a subsidy cost of N27.97 kWh.

The top-performing DisCos in terms of revenue collection were Eko DisCo, which collected ₦41.24 billion, followed by Ikeja DisCo with ₦41.18 billion and Abuja DisCo with ₦35.67 billion. On the other hand, Yola DisCo collected the least revenue with N6.02 billion, while Aba DisCo, which has the least number of customers, collected N3.26 billion. It was not among the lowest; however, Kaduna and Kano collected N11.72 billion and N12.78 billion, respectively.
