A man aged 21 from Bulawayo has been brought to court on grave charges after reportedly raping his elderly neighbour, who is 81, and subsequently dozing off in her bed without clothes. This shocking event has caused widespread anger among residents.
It is alleged that Gift Ncube, the person facing charges, broke into an elderly woman’s house in the Hope Fountain suburb in the early hours of February 15, 2026.
The court proceedings indicate that the incident took place at about 3 AM when Ncube entered the house without permission while the victim was asleep.
The court heard from prosecutors that Ncube had strangled the elderly woman and had threatened to kill her prior to sexually assaulting her. He is accused of having raped her on two occasions: initially in the living room and subsequently in her bedroom. The court was informed that the victim, who resides alone, was overpowered and left with severe trauma from the assault.
In a disturbing development, rather than escaping the scene after the alleged assault, Ncube reportedly got into the victim’s bed and fell asleep without clothes.
The 81-year-old woman was able to get out of the house and find assistance from neighbors, despite what she had gone through. After she raised the alarm, community members reacted swiftly. It was alleged that after entering the house, they found Ncube still asleep and naked in the victim’s bed. Until law enforcement personnel arrived and detained him, inhabitants held him back.
The victim underwent a medical examination and received support after the traumatic incident.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Hope Fountain, with residents voicing their anger and disbelief regarding the purported assault on a defenseless elderly individual in their community. A number of people have demanded justice and tougher actions to safeguard elderly people living by themselves.
Ncube is still in custody while the case moves through the court system. Further details about his plea or the next court appearance have not yet been disclosed by authorities.
The case maintains a focus on worries about gender-based violence and the safety of older adults in residential communities throughout Zimbabwe.
