A partial building collapse sent shockwaves through the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo, in Ebonyi State, on Friday. The two-storey hostel, known as Pentagon Lodge, is located opposite the university’s front gate and was occupied by students

A video clip circulating on social media showed the moment of the collapse, with students in the background lamenting the loss of their belongings. “See, my lodge is falling. My television set is inside. All my properties are inside,” an unidentified lady said in Pidgin, almost sobbing. Another student was heard saying, “Look at the house that someone is paying for.

The cause of the collapse is still unclear, but it’s believed that most residents had vacated the building after noticing cracks on the walls. The university’s Head of Information and Public Relations Department, Ikechukwu Elom, confirmed the incident, stating that the building was privately owned and located outside the university premises. “No life was lost in the incident,” Mr Elom assured.
