In a small town, a tragic example of suspected child sexual abuse has surfaced, garnering significant public attention and raising grave concerns about the treatment of women seeking justice as well as the safety of vulnerable children.
The two little girls involved, ages three and eight, have experienced severe adversity for the most of their lives, along with their mother, according to child-rights advocate Toyin Ndidi Taiwo, who is helping the family.
Tragic events characterize the mother’s story from the outset. During childbirth, she and her twin sister lost their mother. Soon after, their father passed away, leaving their grandmother to look
after the newborn twins. The grandmother’s great poverty prevented them from continuing their education past junior secondary school, so they were forced to drop out.The twins were married at the age of 18.
When the mother’s twin sister passed away from severe bleeding during the delivery of her second child, the heartbreaking cycle persisted. The woman assumed full responsibility for her late sister’s children despite being pregnant with her own second child at the time.
Her husband left her and drove her out of their house after she had two children of her own. She moved to her modest shop with her four children—her two biological children and the two of her late sister—after being left without a support system.
Heavy rains later wrecked the store, which was situated in a flood-prone location. All of her belongings and savings were washed away when the building collapsed. She and the kids barely made it out.
The family started sleeping inside abandoned tricycles since they had nowhere else to stay. She was repeatedly detained by police for “loitering,” compelled to wash the station grounds the following morning, and then let go.
A man offered her assistance during this time of desperation, saying he had found a new place and would soon leave his one-room apartment. He reportedly permitted the family to temporarily reside with him.
Later on, it was discovered to be a misleading gesture. The woman’s two daughters were allegedly sexually abused by the male, who also infected the younger child with a venereal disease. He was taken into custody.
The suspect’s family is reportedly putting tremendous pressure on the mother to “settle out of court” despite the arrest. She has declined to drop the case.
It’s shocking to learn that some people in her neighborhood have supposedly turned against her.
Taiwo claims that other locals have made fun of, humiliated, and criticized her for reporting the abuse, claiming that the suspect “helped her when she was homeless.”
Unsettlingly, some of the people who harassed her were mothers. To protect the attacker, a neighbor allegedly suggested that she lie to the police and say that the assault was committed by a 5-year-old boy who had ran away.
Taiwo, who posted the children’s story online, expressed strong feelings about the situation and denounced the mindset of the community.
“This society expects women to endure pain silently and sees children as disposable, as long as an adult benefitted somewhere,” she said. “But she refuses to be silenced, and I refuse to let her stand alone.”
Additionally, Taiwo affirmed that she will find the mother and her four kids new housing the next week.
The two young girls are seen standing with their backs to the camera in a picture that was included with the report, serving as a visual reminder of the innocence that the accused deed ruined.
Child rights advocates are urging law enforcement to conduct a comprehensive investigation and to shield the woman and her kids from threats. To protect the wellbeing of the children and guarantee that justice is done, many have called for social services and law enforcement to step in.
For the time being, the mother is adamant that she won’t give up on the case due to coercion or threats.
